Retinal Tear Treatment in Metairie, LA

What is a retinal tear?

Vitreous gel protects the retina and gives the eye its shape. Changes in the vitreous gel cause it to detach, or shrink, from the retina, which is a normal process with aging. This is known as posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). As the gel is detaching from the retina, an individual may see eye flashes or floaters in one or both eyes. PVD is painless, normal with aging, and should not cause worry. However, in some cases, the vitreous gel clings to the retina rather than detaching smoothly and can lead to a retinal tear. Retinal tears can lead to retinal detachment if not addressed early.
Other risk factors for a retinal tear include eye injury, previous eye surgery, some glaucoma medication, family or personal history of retinal tears, or nearsightedness.

When should I see a specialist?

An increased number or frequency of eye flashes, an increased size and number of floaters, sudden blurry vision, a peripheral shadow in your field of vision, or a gray curtain moving across your field of vision may all be signs of a retinal tear. If you experience any of these, call a specialist immediately for an evaluation so appropriate treatment can be determined.
