Retinal Detachment Treatment in Metairie, LA

What is retinal detachment?

The retina is the thin layer of tissue that makes up the back part of the eye, and is sensitive to light. The retina receives incoming visual information and is responsible for sending the information through the optic nerve to the brain for processing. Retinal detachment can happen if this thin layer of tissue begins to separate from the rest of the eye. Causes can include retinal tear, aging, previous eye surgeries, eye injury, poorly controlled diabetes leading to diabetic retinopathy or diabetic macular edema, and/or uveitis.

When should I see a specialist?

Retinal detachment can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated immediately. If your symptoms include an increased amount or frequency of eye flashes, an increased size and number of floaters, sudden blurry vision, reduction in peripheral vision, or a shadow moving across your field of vision, you should see a specialist as soon as possible. Surgical intervention will be needed for retinal detachment to prevent permanent vision loss.
