MACULAR DEGENERATION

What is macular degeneration?

The macula is found at the center of the retina and is responsible for sharpness of vision, fine details, and central vision. Macular degeneration occurs when there is damage to the macula. This damage may lead to dry macular degeneration, which is caused by thinning of the macula and is accompanied by growth of protein in the eye, or wet macular degeneration, which is caused by new growth of blood vessels that leak and cause scarring (see diabetic retinopathy or diabetic macular edema). Macular degeneration is typically seen in individuals over the age of 50.

When should I see a specialist?

Macular degeneration is serious and should be addressed immediately if symptoms are noticed. Symptoms include a dark spot in your central vision, blurriness, distorted shapes, or difficulty with vision when completing everyday tasks like driving, reading, and work. You should also see an ophthalmologist yearly if you have a personal or family history of eye disease or are at risk for eye disease due to injury or previous surgery.
