Treatment for Macular Cysts in Metairie, LA

What is a macular cyst?

The macula is at the very center of the retina and is responsible for sharpness of vision, fine details, and central vision. A macular cyst is formed from macular edema (swelling). Edema forms in the macula in a pattern that is similar to a cyst. It can occur with posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), which is a normal process of aging, as described here. A cyst may also be an early sign of a macular hole and can have many causes, including injury, eye surgery, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy or diabetic macular edema, and/or eye inflammation.

When should I see a specialist?

There may be no symptoms to indicate a macular cyst, or you may have blurred vision with distorted colors and shapes. Without treatment, a macular cyst may progress to a macular hole and further complications such as retinal detachment. It is important to see an ophthalmologist yearly if you have a personal or family history of eye disease, or if you have risk factors for eye diseases such as diabetes.
