Treatment For Diabetic Macular Edema in Metairie, LA

What is diabetic macular edema?

Untreated diabetic retinopathy can lead to diabetic macular edema (DME). This condition develops when weakened blood vessels in the eye leak fluid onto the center of the macula (called the fovea). The macula and fovea are the areas of the eye responsible for detailed vision. The leaked fluid causes swelling, which is known as edema. It can also progress to retinal detachment.

When should I see a specialist?

Diabetic macular edema may not always have symptoms, but can have symptoms that include blurred vision, colors that seem to be faded, or difficulty focusing on objects in front of you. Visual changes may be slow and unnoticeable. Without treatment, DME can cause severe or permanent vision loss. If you have diabetes, you should have your eyes checked yearly to reduce your chances of developing long-term damage.
